Message from Shih Yang and Yun Mei, AMSA-UK AMSEP Officers

 

  1. “We received a great response to our AMSA-UK Asian Medical Student Exchange Programme (AMSEP) 2010 mass email so it will definitely be a difficult task for the committee to select our representives to HK this summer!

  3. Firstly, AMSA-Hong Kong has come back to us and confirmed that they are accepting 10 students and it will be a pre-clinical exchange. Based on that, the commitee has agreed on the selection process.

Priority will be given to Years 1 & 2 medical students ahead of the other years (apologies to Years 3, 4 & 5s who have shown interest!) due to the pre-clinical nature of the exchange, the selection will be divided into two parts. Part 1 is Participation in the up-coming AMSEP in Feb and Part 2 will be an interview with the Committee.

  7. Having said that, there is a meeting this weekend in order for the AMSEP Officers to brief you about AMSEP and to confirm the dates that you are available during the 13th-21st of Feb when the Hong Kong students come over. Below are the details of the meeting:


  9. Date: 30th January 2010 (Saturday)

  10. Time: 10:30am

  11. Venue: King's College London Guy's Campus Student Union

  13. Nearest tube station would be London Bridge. Attendance is compulsory to be considered for the programme, so please do turn up and be punctual! It will be an approximately 2-hour meeting so we aim to finish at noon.

8.01.10 // AMSA-UK AMSEP 2010 Application

 

We are proud to announce a bilateral exchange between AMSA-UK and AMSA Hong Kong this academic year.


AMSA HK will be sending 8 delegates to the UK from the 13th-21st of Feb 2010. The current plan is for us to send AMSA-UK members over to Hong Kong around mid-August, however that is still being reviewed.


The AMSA-UK AMSEP 2010 has several aims:


  1. •To foster a good relationship between AMSA-UK and AMSA-HK

  2. •To obtain a healthy comparison of the medical education and healthcare systems

  3. •Gain insight into the Hong Kong medical education and healthcare system

  4. •Provide valuable input on UK medical education and NHS

  5. •To serve as a platform for discussion on current healthcare issues in each country

  6. •To broaden perspective on global medicine and impact on national healthcare

  7. •To experience first-hand cultural aspects of Hong Kong

  8. •To form friendships amongst future doctors in the UK and Asia

  9. •To enhance the vision of a borderless world of job opportunities for doctors


The committee has agreed that eligibility to apply for the exchange to Hong Kong would include TWO criteria:

1.       AMSA-UK 2009/10 Membership

    a.       This includes a 5 pound membership fee

2.       Active participation in the visit from the Hong Kong delegates

    a.       An itinerary has been drawn up for the visit and you would need to make yourself available to be                part of the entourage for a minimum of two days

    b.      Sub-committees will be formed and you will be led by committee members


We strongly encourage all members to apply for our inaugural exchange as it would be a great chance to experience the health care system in a different country as well as to make new medic friends who could possibly go on to be your future colleagues should you decide to pursue a medical career in Hong Kong. Lastly, why resist a summer break after endless studying for exams?? Hong Kong is the place to be in SUMMER 2010!
